In the provinces of the Kingdom of Prussia, were often used only simple striped flags without a coat of arms, even officially. But flags with coats of arms are very decorative and avoid confusions. The flag shown here is heraldically correct, in the shown colors and coat of arms, but this flag is not historical and was probably never used in this style. The Rhine Province was created in 1822 by merging of the Prussian provinces of Kleve, Berg, Niederrhein and Kurtrier, which had existed since the Congress of Vienna (1815). Other areas were connected later, ultimately including the entire Rhineland. The Rhine Province was dissolved by the Allies in 1945.
